Construction workers are in high demand. John Zengaffinen, who started his apprenticeship at the Volken Group this year, knows this too. “I chose this profession because I enjoy working outdoors. At the end of the day, you can see what you’ve accomplished. But what I like best is working as part of a team and overcoming challenges together.” The training to become a construction tradesman (EBA) is as varied as the field itself. It begins with preparing, setting up, and securing the construction site, and covers everything from digging, backfilling, formwork, and masonry to renovation and demolition. John Zengaffinen is also learning how to maintain tools and machinery, work safely, and dispose of waste in an environmentally responsible manner. Anyone interested in pursuing this two-year apprenticeship should be skilled with their hands, physically fit, have a head for heights, and, of course, be able to handle all kinds of weather.
