Project Description:
As part of the “Réaménagement Giratoires Sierre / Sierre Est” project, the Cloux-Roussier, Viaduc Nord, and Métralie roundabouts, as well as the adjacent road sections of the T9 / RC 45 / RC 630, were rebuilt and renovated in phases. The work was carried out while traffic continued to flow and included extensive milling, preparation, and paving work.
Among other tasks, VOWEG carried out the milling of existing pavements, the cleaning and preparation of the subgrades, and the placement and compaction of various asphalt pavements. Different base, subbase, binder, and surface courses were installed, including AC F 22, AC T 22 S, AC B 16 S with polymer-modified bitumen, AC MR 11, and SDA 8-12. A total of approximately 5,480 metric tons of asphalt mix was processed, and approximately 6,400 square meters of pavement was milled.
Requirements:
The project’s particular complexity stemmed from its multi-phase execution within heavily trafficked intersections, the numerous junctions, roundabout geometries, utility shafts, and drainage systems. In addition, a significant portion of the paving work took place at night between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., which placed high demands on traffic management, asphalt production, transport logistics, the deployment of equipment and personnel, and the coordination of the individual construction phases. This necessitated precise coordination of asphalt production, transportation logistics, paving equipment, personnel, and compaction, as well as the timely reopening of the traffic areas. Additional challenges arose from
the complex geometries of the roundabouts, the numerous entrances and exits, curbs, manholes, and drainage systems, as well as the paving of various types of asphalt and layer configurations. The work therefore required a high degree of flexibility, careful phasing, and close coordination among all parties involved.
